Hair loss is a natural but devastating life process, resulting in loss of confidence and our sense of self. As we age and our hair follicles tire, the thin spots and bald patches can be emotionally triggering, and it’s hard to explain to our loved ones why it takes such a heavy toll.
Luckily, there is hope. Platelet rich plasma or the PRP injection is a revolutionary non-surgical therapy for natural hair follicle stimulation which may help to maintain hair density, treat thinning hair and correct male pattern baldness naturally. The PRP serum is made from the platelet rich plasma separated from your own blood which, when injected into the scalp, rejuvenates the hair follicles and promotes blood flow and tissue restoration. With Eric Nager, M.D. of OptiHealth Institute, your frustrations are understood and compassionately addressed. Baltimore men and women are restoring their once luxurious locks without the use of the harsh chemicals and their side effects.

PRP Hair Restoration vs Other Methods
Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair Procedure
Blood is collected from the patient and placed in a container. The container is then put into a centrifuge where it is rotated rapidly to separate blood components. The platelets separate from other blood components. Platelets are prepared for topical application and injection into the scalp. Local anesthesia is injected around the area to make the process as comfortable as possible.
Treatments are scheduled about one to two months apart, and three to four treatments are recommended with follow-up treatments at six months to one year. Some improvement in reversing miniaturization of hair follicles can be expected in the first two to three months. The treatments must be continued (every 1 or 2 years) to maintain any improvement.
How long until I see results from the treatment?
Every person is different, and so are their situations. While many people begin to see results as early as 2-3 months after their initial injection, another person may take more or less time.
Periodic treatments are highly recommended in order to maintain the health of the scalp and to promote long-lasting and highly satisfactory results.
How long do the growth benefits of PRP last?
Some people may go for maintenance every 3 to 4 months, others may only need to go once a year. Luckily, you can help improve your results with some altered health habits such as observing good nutrition and exercise regimen and with some TLC to your luscious new locks.
How can I best prepare for my treatments?
Staying hydrated and rested, eating healthily, and keeping your scalp clean is a great place to start! Avoid dyeing or bleaching your hair, tobacco and alcohol, and anti-inflammatory medications.
Am I a good candidate?
While chronic health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure do not preclude you from PRP, it may not be recommended if you are on blood-thinning medication, have signs or symptoms of infection, or are a heavy smoker, as these may disrupt the healing process.
PRP is ideal for anyone who has hair transplants or has recently started experiencing hair loss.
Be sure to speak to our staff about any of your health concerns, we are compassionate and eager to help.
How many treatments are needed?
This will vary depending on your individual reactions and the severity of your hair loss. A typical treatment plan will involve scheduling a few periodic injections in the first few months. Once your scalp and hair follicles are healthy and stimulated, we will treat them only as necessary for maintenance.
Are there side effects?
Platelet Rich Plasma injections are a safe and natural therapy for healing the body. The procedure uses your own locally sourced growth factors to stimulate blood flow and healing in areas that just need a boost.
You may experience some initial tenderness at the site of the injection, as with any shot, but you will not be troubled by the itching, burning, or risk of reaction that other procedures may cause.
Female Hair Loss and Platelet Rich Plasma
Many women experience alopecia or hair thinning around the age of 35, with the beginning of perimenopause. As hormones begin to decline, women’s hair may become dry and brittle, leading to hair loss. Women can also struggle with hair loss following pregnancy, as their hormones are rebounding and returning to pre-pregnancy levels.
Some Of The Reasons Women Lose Their Hair Include:
- Estrogen and progesterone imbalances
- Hormonal decline
- Childbirth
- Hypothyroid
- Hashimoto’s
- Cushing’s disease
- Medication side effects
While men may be accustomed to the idea of losing their hair, it can be truly devastating for women who lose luscious locks. Luckily, Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy can promote hair regrowth and restore lustrous hair volume and thickness.
Male Hair Loss and Platelet Rich Plasma
Male pattern baldness can occur with men as early as the age of 19 years old, while some men may not notice hair loss until their 40’s or 50’s. Often, men experience hair loss due to genetic factors or because they have higher levels of dihydrotestosterone, which is a form of testosterone that kills hair follicles. Alopecia may start with a receding hairline, or patches of hair may start to go missing.
Some Reasons Alopecia Can Occur in Men Include:
- Aging
- Testosterone imbalances
- Medications
- Overexertion
- Genetic factors
Whatever the reason for your hair loss, Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy can stimulate hair regrowth, or slow down the rate of hair loss. PRP Therapy works for hair restoration by injecting stem cells from the patient’s blood into the scalp, to provide nutrition to hair follicles and stimulate the healing of damaged tissues. Once nutrition to hair follicles is restored, men may experience the regrowth of their hair.
Platelet rich plasma injections can also aid in the stimulation of hair growth after hair transplants.
